Personality:On the surface, Alaric Saltzman is an easy-going teacher who wants his kids to succeed, who insists they call him Ric instead of Mr. Saltzman, who gives them chances at extra credit, and who enjoysseveral glassesa glass of bourbon at the end of the day. This isn't an inaccurate description, not really. But, much like Mystic Falls, there's a lot going on under the surface.
Speaking of the surface, Alaric doesn't go to great lengths to hide his feelings. When he is angry, he lets you know, as he has no problem shutting Damon out for killing him (either time). When very down, he turns to alcohol, preferring to wallow in the pain. In a way, alcohol cures all. Alcohol mends friendships, it numbs the pain, and it makes life bearable. While he doesn’t do things like show up to school drunk, Alaric is a functioning alcoholic on his worst day - and every day, if he's honest with himself. Some people eat their feelings, Alaric drinks them. He also drinks for fun. And when it’s Monday. He drinks to dirty shame and he drinks to a well-won battle. When he goes on binges, he pulls away from everyone completely.
Alaric is also a playful person, having teased Isobel, calling her a hotter Mulder. He's been shown to flirt with Jenna and Isobel openly. And he managed a rapport with Dr. Meredith Fell. He's not bad at it. In a relationship, he's sweet, conscientious and a gentleman. He can be a dork. He arrived in Mystic Falls as a history teacher and he truly enjoys history calling first hand accounts "porn for a history teacher." He likes to read. He has an intellectual side to him and he’s smarter than he comes off. He has extensive knowledge into Mystic Falls’ past thanks to Isobel’s research. He’s naturally curious and he has a real thirst for knowledge. He accompanies Elena and Stefan to Duke to check out Isobel's research. This coupled with spending half a year on the Other Side watching everything going on in Mystic Falls - he's aware of all of it. And he has a great memory. He's made a point to watch over Elena and Damon in particular. (I'm sure he's watching over Jeremy but it hasn't been mentioned because the writers are the writers.)
When it comes to specific feelings, he doesn't voice them with just anyone. He’s not one to talk through his problems. He prefers to bottle them up and let them fester. He’ll deal with them on his own. He’ll brood. But, he isn't about to sit up at night rambling on about his vampire ex(es, now). He did open up to Jenna about his inner pain and past with his ex-wife, Isobel, but only because their relationship was hanging by a thread. He will make a maudlin or sarcastic joke or two, however.
Alaric is a determined person. He dedicated most of his adult life to finding the vampire that he believed killed Isobel. Before she died, he pursued her enough that she filed two restraining orders on him. He all but stalked Damon Salvatore for months. When he gets an idea in his head, he goes after it. In edition, despite how he can be, he's a pretty hardened person thanks to the loss in his life. He takes time to warm up to people and to fully trust them. He and Damon don't immediately become friends.
Isobel Saltzman was his first love. He felt betrayed and hurt when she returned to town the first time but in a moment of weakness and love, Isobel admitted she felt something for Alaric. She then compelled him to move on. After showing back up and being compelled by Klaus, Isobel revealed that she truly loves (or loved at one time) her ex-husband. Now a vampire, he would be aware of this but it's safe to say he's pretty over all of it. It's very 'past life' for him.
Outside of that, he grew to love and trust Elena’s Aunt Jenna. In fact, it bothered him to have to lie to her. He doesn't like lying to his loved ones. It pains him. He feels guilty, especially when John Gilbert returns to town and blackmails him. Both of his exes were vampires and Alaric has to live with that as well as with losing the both of them. Jenna's death hits him hard. Before learning about Damon's bite, he'd been on quite the bender.
Alaric has come to be very protective of Elena Gilbert and by proxy, Jeremy. He became their guardian. He's devastated when he sees Liz Forbes has shot Jeremy and basically flips off the witches because Jeremy's just a kid. After seeing how out of sorts Jeremy is, he offers to stay on the couch. He will always be tied to Elena because she is Isobel's daughter and he does feel a responsibility for her but that responsibility hasn't kicked in fully yet. He does feel horrible seeing as every one of her parental figures has died. Except for John, despite his last ditch effort to be a good father, he was a dick.
As shown several times, mostly with Damon, Alaric can really hold a grudge. It took most of the first season for Damon to wear down his resolve and for the two of them to form a pseudo-friendship. By season 2, they had reached full-fledged friendship and even respect. However, when Alaric becomes a friend and ally, he’s loyal to the end. Alaric’s friendship with Damon survives Damon killing him twice. At the end of season 2, Damon pushes Alaric to kill him, to get him back for essentially being the one responsible for putting Elena’s aunt Jenna in harm’s way and Alaric can’t bring himself to because Damon is a friend. He offers Damon a drink when he finds out about his lethal werewolf bite. Alaric is one of the only people besides Elena who can talk Damon down or who attempts to stop him from doing something asinine as in the case when he goes after Caroline’s father, Bill Forbes, who had been torturing her. He knows when to not take Damon seriously but he does have his limits. And Damon killing him really pisses Ric off. Despite Damon being the reason Jenna was taken as a plan B, he doesn't blame Damon. He knows this is all Klaus' doing.
Alaric harbored deep-seeded prejudices against vampires for months. He hunted them down and killed them - including Meredith's brother, Logan Fell. This manifested in an alter ego and nurtured by Esther on the other side. Because he wore the Gilbert ring, when he died a supernatural dead, he spent time on "the other side" and she used this time to work on her plan B against vampires. After ensuring he turned, she bound his life force to Elena Gilbert's. His ruthless/sarcastic/violent side kicked in. He kidnapped Caroline Forbes and generally terrorized everyone including Damon who he beat to a pulp.
After dying, it was showed that he was back to his old self and a ghost. He's brought back twice in the following year. Once, when Damon visits his grave - which confirms he watches over everyone and misses Damon very much and once when the veil is dropped thanks to Bonnie, Katherine and Silas. It's revealed that Alaric is still a vampire. He takes time to have lunch with Jeremy and Elena. He makes little quips, helps when he can (he scouts out the quarry as a possible Silas drop-point). He exchanges a flirtation of sorts with Lexi, Stefan's best friend. He pops up once past his canon point when they all come together to celebrate Katherine Pierce's death.
While Alaric is a moral person, he's morally grey most of the time. He'll realize he definitely deserves to be here - especially from what he did thanks to Esther. He's well past most of his drama and pain so it's going to be a fresh start. He'll contribute where he can and watch over the younger set. Something he'll have to adjust to is real cravings, needing blood. And being able to touch other people, interact, he'll love it. And he may not jump at reducing his debt. He'll assume this is his life for eternity and he'll be fine with that. But, he will do what he has to to keep the people he loves safe. He'll also curb Damon if need be. Because it's Damon.
Powers/Abilities:
Before becoming a vampire, Alaric had no supernatural-slash-extraordinary powers. He was human. But, he had a knack for creating weapons used to defend himself against vampires and werewolves. This is true of his wrist-stake launcher and vervain/wolfsbane bombs. He also crafted vervain jewelry. And he's got a green thumb for vervain having tended his own garden. Alaric had also taught himself self defense. He's still a great shot with a cross bow and a gun.
Now, as a vampire he has...
☓ enhanced speed, ontop of that, the ability to "appear" behind you/in rooms super quietly.
☓ appearing in a flash, essentially.
☓ the ability to jump really high
☓ enhanced strength
☓ enhanced senses (sight, smell, taste and especially hearing, vampires can hear conversations from across a room)
☓ when the fangs come out, his eyes go black, red-black veins protrude outward (this also happens when he's hungry)
☓ the ability to compel a human not on vervain - this is making eye contact and getting them to do something/say something/forget that anything happened whatsoever
☓ he can manipulate a persons' dream state, especially when they're weakened, this is easier with humans, though, he hasn't had time to cultivate this power, it's just in his arsenal
☓ through the character of lexi, it's been illustrated that some older vampires can fabricate illusions. Lexi causes Stefan to think he's been starving for years, while Damon wastes his time manipulating fog and sending a crow places. he hardly ever uses this. again, he's owhere near this level of discipline, nor does he care enough but, just making a note of it to be thorough
☓ a vampire can never age, and they heal faster from injuries
☓ his blood can also heal a human's injuries
☓ if he feeds you his blood and you die, you wake up in transition to become a vampire
Being a vampire also means there are weaknesses...
☓ a vampire needs to be invited into a dwelling
☓ a vampire can't walk into the sunlight, but damon has a ring courtesy of a witch named emily bennett that lets him walk in the sun
☓ fire, a stake through the heart, sunlight, and a werewolf (or hybrid) bite are all lethal to vampires.
☓ vervain weakens a vampire if ingested or injected. it also burns. (but it also keeps an original vampire from being able to compel them)
☓ being stabbed by anything wooden is excruciating but not fatal, this is the same with wooden bullets
☓ feeding on animal blood makes a vampire weaker than say if they fed on human blood (which damon does, usually from a bag depending on canon point)
☓ older vampires are stronger but hybrids do seem to be the exception
According to canon, however, Alaric is a separate kind of - unkillable original vampire when he transforms. His life force is tied to that of Elena's. When she dies, he dies. So, technically, that's no longer a thing. But, it's shown in canon when he gets to spend time on this side of the veil, he's still a vampire. So, I think you could still call him a vampire of Original caliber.
Appearance:Alaric Saltzman is in his early 30’s. He has a disarming smile and brown hair that defies nature. Seriously, his hair is amazing. He also has hazel eyes. He’s built and well-muscled. Mostly, he prefers collared shirts and his brown or black jackets. He also rocks a scarf now and then. When he relaxes, he wears a t-shirt, usually - seldom v-necks (except when spending hours in the wilderness), because he prefers scoop. He's a boxers over briefs man and yes, that clearly matters.CR AUGame You’re Transferring CR from:

Samples:Actionspam Sample:[ transmissions are convenient. it takes time to get used to people being in your head. and man can they come at the wrong times but it's kind of fun to be in others. insert an intended cast member here ]
Uh, hey. I feel like I'm still bad at these. Finally get the hang of text messaging and then I die. Who thought the new frontier would be telepathy. I was still appreciating pockets of time when people could actually see me. And, Jeremy doesn't count. [ Because he'd died. ] Does anyone ever send more than they want? Or, maybe then send a message to the wrong person. The temple's just like high school. Most high school's have several Amber's or Sara's. I was always the only Alaric. But, if another Alaric gets a message from me? Sorry, especially it's from a guy named Damon Salvatore.
Prose Sample:If given the chance to stay on that side of the veil between worlds, Alaric would have taken it in a second. Elena and Jeremy were older, though Jeremy needed an adult figure in his life. Damon had gotten the girl but Alaric of all people knew that would never be the end of his story. Damon Salvatore would always be Damon Salvatore and so he wanted to be there when something went wrong. He wasn't saying Elena and Damon would break up forever - but a break-up was inevitable. He could see the pain coming. The pain of Bonnie Bennett's impending death, pain Elena would deal with but Alaric wanted to be there for.
But, Alaric wanted to come back for selfish reasons. He missed good food. Good sex. A good book. The only time he'd read were when someone he knew was reading something. Nobody could know how annoying it was for someone to turn the page before he'd finished reading. It wasn't as if he wasn't finished. He got the big picture. He was done. It was the end of the road. Boys II Men had sung him to his grave.
But, for someone like Alaric, he had to fight the daily urge to try and do something. Between watching Bonnie Bennett be preyed upon by the creeper college professor who was in need of an ass kicking - or a strictly worded warning - and Elena ruining everyone's lives thanks to her being without humanity, things got more and more difficult for Alaric. And, he could no longer bother Jeremy.
Katherine had killed Jeremy.
He owed her a stake in the heart. He kept a short list. If ever he visited the right side again (because the Other Side? was the wrong side) he'd do what he could. Which was why he took the time to have lunch. It was why he encouraged Jeremy in his underage drinking. Who cared. They were all pretty much dead. Jeremy was a hunter, now. He'd died three times. What was a drink in a town where they let Matt Donovan serve alcohol? He helped at the school and he opened Damon's eyes.
He'd done everything he could.
Besides stick it to Katherine.
That could happen next time. And maybe he'd say more to that Lexi chick.
